How to Insert and Remove a Tapered Bushing in a Pulley

Surely you have encountered connecting a gear to a shaft or a pulley to a drive shaft.

Among the various options, connecting a gear to a shaft or a pulley to a drive shaft through clamping devices and conical bushings can be an appropriate choice.

These connection systems, although rarely used especially in situations with particular technical requirements, are indeed very advantageous in various contexts and for different reasons, and it is also very easy and practical.

In this video we created in our warehouse, we show you how easy it is to mount the conical bushing

Here are some advantages of shaft connections via Sleeves or Conical Bushings:

  • A precise fit without play allows for a perfect control of the positioning of the fitted gear as if it were welded or made in one piece with the shaft
  • The elimination of play helps to prevent corrosion formation due to friction caused by micro-vibrations introduced by imperfect concentricity of the shaft with respect to the housing
  • Avoiding play increase between the keyway and the key itself for applications with frequent start-stop or frequent direction changes. For example, if you have a servomotor fitted with a key on a pulley/gear and require high dynamics and high positioning accuracy, the key connection is better avoided
  • The ease of assembly and disassembly helps reduce costs and speed up maintenance and initial assembly times
  • Simplifying phasing: if you need to connect 2 shafts to each other with 2 gears each and want to align the teeth of the gears, just loosen the sleeve screws, reduce friction, position the gears correctly, and re-tighten. With the key, you would have necessarily required precise machining from your subcontractor
  • Often one of the problems of using the key is precisely in the manufacturing of the keyway on the shaft and on the gear hub.
  • The conical bushings and geared components are off the shelf. How many of you have found yourselves begging the subcontractor for an urgent machining?
  • Time savings in assembly and disassembly
  • Cost savings: it can be demonstrated that the machining of keyways on shafts and gears is disadvantageous when dealing with small batches compared to purchasing a conical bushing
