Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a worm gearbox, a coaxial gearbox, and an orthogonal gearbox with gears?

Gearboxes are distinguished by the arrangement of shafts, the transmission system, and efficiency.

  • Worm gearbox: has shafts arranged at 90°, is compact, and generally economical, but has lower efficiency compared to gearboxes, especially with high reduction ratios.
  • Coaxial gearbox: has aligned input and output shafts and generally offers high efficiency.
  • Orthogonal gearbox with gears (conical-helical): has shafts arranged at 90° and generally offers higher efficiency compared to worm gearboxes.

ATTI offers a variety of gearboxes, including products from VARVEL and Chiaravalli.

The choice depends on the reduction ratio, required torque, available space, and operating conditions.

How do you choose the reduction ratio of a gearbox?

The reduction ratio of a gearbox is calculated by dividing the rotational speed of the motor by the desired output speed.

For example, with a 4-pole motor running at approximately 1,400 RPM, to achieve an output speed of 70 RPM, a reduction ratio of 20:1 is required.

In addition to the reduction ratio, it is important to verify the output torque, taking into account the service factor and the operating conditions of the application.

ATTI can assist you in selecting the most suitable gearbox. For a technical assessment, it is useful to provide the motor power, the desired output speed, and the load type.
